The Victoria University motto is “For Science and Art”, which refers to the university’s origins as a school of science and art, established in 1836. The first chancellor was William Lonsdale who developed the idea for the school, and it began with four staff members and 27 students. In 1851 the university received royal charter from Queen Victoria (hence the name) but remained relatively small until the late nineteenth century when it started to grow significantly. Today there are around 40,000 students enrolled at VU.
VU has been consistently ranked as one of Australia’s top universities by independent surveys, and its graduate careers have been highly successful: according to the Australian survey of graduates from 2012-13, nearly half of all VU graduates were employed within six months of completing their studies, compared with less than 30 percent of all Australian university graduates.
In addition to academic excellence, Victorians also benefit from an array of facilities including world class libraries and museums, modern sports and recreational facilities, and stunning architecture. And just like many other universities, you can find everything from coffee shops to laundry to bookshops on campus.
